Data Governance and Data Management - a practical guide
13 July 2018
With HESA Data Futures, GDPR, and (in England) OfS, suddenly it feels that data processes at HE providers are being subjected to a level of scrutiny which they have never before received. Discussions about data governance and data management have moved out of IT and into the mainstream, and planners are clearly expected to play a role. But for many of us the jargon remains impenetrable, the actions distressingly vague, and success measures challenging to define. What does it mean, what does a good data governance process look like, and how do we go about introducing one at an HE provider?
This HESPA training is being led by several planners (Steve McDonald, University of Glasgow; Alison Wallis, Royal Holloway University of London; Olivia Kew-Fickus, University of Birmingham) whose universities have started down the data governance path. It builds directly on sessions led by HESA around "data capability" several years ago (but attendance at those is in no way a prerequisite). We want to make the abstract concepts of data governance concrete and relevant to an HE context. We will share real-life experiences - good, bad and ugly! You should leave the day with an understanding of several models of how to get going with data governance, some of the pitfalls to avoid, some tools and tips, and having met people on the same road as you.
A full agenda will be circulated nearer the time, but for the sake of booking travel, please note that the event will start at 10.00 and close by 15:30.
