This workshop is designed to provide colleagues new to data roles with a comprehensive overview and induction to the world of Higher Education data. A broad range of data sources which can inform decision making and performance monitoring will be covered although there will be a particular focus on HESA data.
The workshop will be delivered through a combination of presentations with an opportunity for participants to ask questions after each section. Interactive polls, discussions and demonstrations will also used throughout the workshop to allow for attendee participation.

Target Audience: Those who need an understanding of what data is available, how it is utilised to both monitor HE activity and to communicate with stakeholders within and outside the institution.
Estimated level of audience knowledge: Beginner / Intermediate
Useful information about the sessions: The workshops will be delivered via Teams and it is useful to have both camera and microphone enabled. There will be regular breaks throughout the day, including a longer break for lunch. Participants are encouraged to request breaks if they need them.
Participant preparation: A preliminary questionnaire will be shared prior to the event to ask attendees what they are hoping to get out of the course.

About Brendan:
Brendan has been at the University of Northampton for the past eight years where he oversees the business intelligence, management information, data governance, student number planning, statutory returns, and performance/KPI reporting. Prior to this Brendan was at the University of Leicester where he established a planning function. He has also held several non-planning roles at other universities. He has been involved with a number of the HESPA Special Interest Groups and has enjoyed his involvement with the HESPA Mentoring Programme, as he is passionate about developing the planning profession and helping shape sector-wide capability and career pathways.
Outside higher education, Brendan is an experienced Chair of a Multi Academy Trust and a qualified volleyball coach.
About Ruth:
Ruth has worked within HE for the past 13 years, working as a data analyst across a range of public sector bodies prior to this. In most recent years, Ruth has led a range of high profile systems and data teams and is currently responsible for data governance and student reporting at the University of Nottingham. Ruth is passionate about sector engagement and driving core developments across the HE sector and is currently Secretary of the Student Records Officers Conference (SROC). She also works as a member of the steering committee for the HESPA statutory returns special interest group. In her spare time, Ruth acts as a mentor to early career data professionals, is a governor for a local primary school and has recently qualified as a Pilates instructor.
