HESPA Executive Director Recruitment

Message from the HESPA Chair

The Higher Education Strategic Planners Association (HESPA) is the representative body for professionals working in strategy and planning roles within UK higher education. HESPA plays a crucial role in supporting our members through advocacy, development, and networking opportunities. By providing a unified voice, HESPA represents members inside the sector by lobbying agencies, sector bodies, government, and other policymakers to drive improvements that benefit our members and the higher education sector as a whole.

One of HESPA’s primary functions is to offer a central source of learning and development for our members. We run a busy annual training programme covering a diverse range of topics that align with the broad array of remits and responsibilities of our members. This training is open to all roles and levels, and colleagues from other functions are encouraged to attend, recognising the need for a coordinated and collaborative approach between different departments at member institutions.

HESPA also provides a unique platform for members to connect and share challenges and opportunities. Through various special interest groups, private discussion boards, and events, HESPA promotes networking and community-building. These platforms enable members to share best practices, stay updated with developments, and collaborate on advancing strategy and planning work within the sector.

Despite its many strengths, HESPA faces several challenges in keeping pace with the ever-evolving landscape of higher education policy and regulation. Keeping members informed and prepared for changes in policy, and new compliance requirements is a continuous task. Additionally, the need to balance the diverse needs and ideas of its members while presenting a compelling and unified voice can be complex. Also, the higher education sector is currently grappling with several pressing challenges, such as financial pressures digital transformation, sustainability, and maintaining the quality of education and research.

HESPA also supports members by providing resources, presentations, and videos from previous events, which are available in the Knowledge Hub. This repository of information helps members stay informed and equipped to handle their responsibilities effectively. Furthermore, HESPA’s advocacy work ensures that the voices of strategic planners are heard in sector-wide discussions and debates, influencing policy, promoting awareness, understanding of strategy and planning issues.

As HESPA Chair, it is a privilege to work with the HESPA team, Executive Committee, and the wider PHES organisations as we continue our dedication to supporting the learning, development, and career progression needs of our members. By fostering a collaborative and informed community, we help our members navigate the challenges of the higher education sector and contribute to shaping its future. The role of the HESPA Executive Director is pivotal in driving these efforts, ensuring that the association continues to provide valuable support and representation for its members.

I look forward to receiving your application.

Wesley Rennison
HESPA Chair and Director of Strategic Planning at the University of Strathclyde
